Cataract surgery – this is where a cloudy lens is surgically removed and replaced with a new and clear intraocular lens implant. This is one of the most common operations worldwide. The success rate improves with increased numbers of cases. Prof. Scott performs approximately 3,000 cases per year.

Cataract surgery accounts for 11% of all surgery in the UK with 400,000 cases performed each year. Prof Scott is set to perform just under 1% of the the total number of UK cataracts this year.

Femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) – this is where the initial part of the cataract surgery is performed with a very precise laser. The main benefit of this technique is in the use of multifocal intraocular lenses to allow patients to read and see at distance after lens surgery and also toric intraocular lenses that treat astigmatism. Prof Scott is trained and accredited on the Advanced Medical Optics Catalys FLACS system

Femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) allows a precise laser to perform the majority of the cataract surgery to improve safety and outcomes with premium lens surgery

Vitreoretinal surgery (VR) - this is surgery to the posterior segment of the eye, the part that lies behind the lens. It is most commonly used to treat retinal detachments and bleeds, membranes and holes that affect the macula (the area responsible for fine central vision) and diabetic eye disease. Other indications for the VR surgery that Professor Scott performs include the management of eyes where cataract surgery has had complications and after ocular trauma.
